Transfer Students

Transferring Academic Credit to VIST
A transfer student seeking a Master’s degree is defined as a graduate student who has attended a US-accredited institution or college. The student is seeking to transfer to the Virginia Institute of Science & Technology to complete their Master’s degree program.
Admission Requirements For Transfer Students
A maximum of 12 semester credits (or 18 quarter credits) of high-quality graduate work done at an accredited U.S. institution or an officially recognized degree-granting international institution may be applied toward the requirements for a Master’s degree. However, credits earned to complete a previous Master’s degree, whether at VIST or elsewhere, may not be applied to a second Master’s degree at VIST.
Approval to apply any transferred credits toward a degree program must be granted by the student’s academic adviser, the program head or graduate officer, and the Graduate School.
Transfer credits must meet the following criteria:
Must have been earned at an accredited U.S. institution or an officially recognized degree-granting international institution.
Must be of “A” or “B” grade value (“B-” grades are not acceptable; pass/fail grades are not transferable unless the former institution verifies them as at least “B” quality).
Must appear on an official graduate transcript.
Must have been earned within the seven years prior to the date of registration in a degree program at VIST.
Transfer of Non-degree and Certificate Graduate Credits
Approval to apply non-degree and certificate graduate credits toward a master’s degree program must be granted by the program head or the chair of the Academic Committee at VIST. A maximum of 9 credits earned as a non-degree or certificate student prior to acceptance into a degree program may be applied toward the degree.
