Academic Advising

Welcome to VIST!

The student service office  at Virginia Institute of Science of Technology leads and engages a community of academic advising that strives for an unparalleled environment for students to explore opportunities, identify goals, and implement plans to reach those goals. We aim to provide an educational experience marked by personalized academic plans, intellectual and personal relationships with faculty, and acquisition of both general knowledge and discipline-specific expertise. We value the breadth of perspectives provided by faculty, staff, and peer academic advisors who work collaboratively to guide and introduce students to the multitude of opportunities and resources across campus. Finally, we encourage all students to take ownership of their educational experience by proactively exploring, consistently reflecting, and deliberately planning as their goals change over time.

As a graduate institution, all of our students will be assigned a faculty advisor who is responsible not only for assisting in course planning, but also in guiding the student in the choice and expectations of an internship and in job placement after graduation.  In addition to the faculty advisor, VIST has Career Services Office that works to identify employment opportunities for which our students are being prepared with job-ready skills.  Our institutional goal is to achieve high placement in the field in which the student has been qualified.  While our goal and commitment is very high, however, we can not guarantee that all graduates will find a job in a relevant field.
